We Need to Hear from YOU!

Sixth Mount Zion is applying for the Lilly Endowment’s Exploring Christian Practices Initiative. This grant could be up to $2.5 million for a period of 5 years! It is very competitive, they are awarding no more than 60 organizations.

The grant seeks to fund organizations in developing and enhancing programs that help diverse individuals explore Christian practices to address spiritual questions and nourish their religious lives. Successful proposals will focus on retrieving, adapting, or refining practices from their specific theological and ecclesial traditions—such as meditation, prayer, retreats, discernment, pilgrimages, small groups, testimony, music, and scripture study—to serve groups both inside and outside their current constituencies.

We believe that the BASICS, which are outlined in Acts 2:42-47 and ground our mission, are the key. Our letter of interest expressed our desire to build upon those. The Pastor and Executive Minister have ideas, but we need to hear from Members of the Mount.

The short film, Echoes of a Dream has been nominated for Best Documentary: Midform in the 30th Annual Webby Awards, which is hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times. Out of more than 13,000 entries from over 70 countries, The Newviews Agency made it to the final five at the Webby Awards (up against giants such as PBS, National Geographic, and Business Insider).

As a nominee, The Newviews Agency is eligible to win a Webby People’s Voice Award, which is decided by online public vote. From now until April 16th , Supporters of the film can cast their votes at vote.webbyawards.com. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

We will have a short discussion about what baptism is and what baptism is not to make sure you understand and to give you information about what to expect. About Today...

The Sisters of Sixth Mount Zion will lead us in worship along with the Instruments of Praise and the Women's Day Chorus. We look forward to a good word from our guest preacher. Women who have it in their closets are asked to wear pastels or shades of pink. Women who are able to give a donation above their tithes and offerings are asked to do so and note that it is a Women's Day Offering on their envelope or when giving online.

About Yesterday…

Our attentions were focused on 5 women of the Bible: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. We listened, we learned, we laughed, we cried, we shared, we sang, we danced, we asked, we answered, we gave, we received, we thought, we guessed, we agreed, we encouraged! We did ALL THE THINGS that women can and will do when prompted by the anointing...Special Thanks to every woman that contributed or served before, during, and after today’s session! To God be the Glory! Oh, What a Time! ( Deacon Val Short) Deacon Short has uploaded A LOT of photos in the Women's Ministry group on Realm Connect. Sisters, check them out!

We are still in the story. Through scripture, drama, music, movement and discussion...we learned about how the stories about women in the Bible continue to be relevant for women today. (Sister Sharon Taylor)

Our Women’s Weekend theme this year is Still in the Story: Say Her Name . Our focus scripture is Matthew 1, which lists Jesus' genealogy. There five women are intentionally named across forty-two generations. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, the wife of Uriah, and Mary remind us that God’s redemptive story has always moved through women whose lives were complex, courageous, and often marginalized. At the same time, the genealogy points to at least 37 other women whose names were never recorded, yet whose faith, labor, and love carried the promise forward.

We pray that Still in the Story: Say Her Name honors both the women we can name, and the women history did not, affirming that even when unnamed or unseen, women have always been central to what God is doing in the world.

Register by March 8, 2026. NOTE: The Women's Weekend events are FREE. The form gives you an option to give your Women's Day Offering while registering. Payment is NOT required to register online. You can register online without providing your credit card information.

Because ice remains an issue in our parking lot, the Church Office will remain closed on Thursday. Our staff (Pastor, Executive Minister, and Administrative Assistant) are checking emails.

At Sixth Mount Zion, we don't believe in begging members for money. But, we do believe that being a good steward over the finances God blesses us with is an important part of discipleship. By the end of the month, 2025 Contribution Statements will be sent to those whom we have email addresses for. Those who've given more than $1,000.00 but we don't have an email address for will be printed. Others will be printed upon request.

We switched to a new church management system last year, so we ask that you review your statement for accuracy and let us know as soon as possible if there are any discrepancies.

As we end the first month of January, prayerfully consider what you have been giving and, if you know God is calling you to do more, take a faith step today!

This year, our Memorial Service is being held on December 21st. What you may not know is that because it is the Winter Solstice (the longest night), the date is often the setting for "Blue Christmas" or "Longest Night" services in Christian traditions, offering a space for those grieving or feeling lonely during the holidays to find comfort, hope, and recognition for their pain, acknowledging that Christmas isn't joyful for everyone, focusing on the promise of light in darkness. So, even if you do not have a member on this year's Memorial Roll Call, but are grieving someone or something no longer with you, you are invited to come on over to the afternoon service to be in virtual community with others because you are not alone! We'll be live on Facebook, YouTube, and DialPad Meetings (audio only).

At Sixth Mount Zion, we don't just go to church, we are the church.

We have 100 people registered so far. If you are planning to participate, please register TODAY. We need to make assignments, so we need to know how many people we are sending out, what supplies we need to buy for each group, etc. If you know you want to participate, click the link to register or complete a paper form TODAY.

Pastor Nelson's God-given vision for November 30th remains: that we GO OUTSIDE of the church building to be the hands, feet, heart, and mouth of God in the earth. So, we ask that you joyfully accept what your assignment is, even if it wasn't your first choice.

Notes on Completing the Form:

Each adult must register separately.
Parents can list minor children who will be with them on the form in the designated section.
WAIVER OF LIABILITY: If you choose NO for any section of the waiver (except Photographic Release), you will NOT be assigned an outreach activity and we ask that you do not participate.

If you’re able to help us, we’ll be working to prepare for the Mount Market on the following days and times. If you can help during the day hours, just stop by. At Sixth Mount Zion, we don't just go to church, we are the church.

We have 77 people registered so far and we hope that those who are planning to participate will register TODAY so that we can make assignments. This is crucial because we need to know how many people we are sending out, what supplies we need to buy for each group, etc. If you know you want to participate, click the link to register now.

Notes on Completing the Form:

Each adult must register separately.
Parents can list minor children who will be with them on the form in the designated section.
WAIVER OF LIABILITY: If you choose NO for any section of the waiver (except Photographic Release), you will NOT be assigned an outreach activity and we ask that you do not participate.

Join us for worship as we celebrate God for the work of our Executive Minister, Rev. Dwylene Butler.

At Sixth Mount Zion, we don't just go to church, we are the church.

This is not just a part of our Mission Litany, it is part of the vision that God has given Pastor Nelson. We are called to be the hands, feet, eyes, and heart of God on the earth. That means we do our part to help feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick, shelter the unhoused, and visit the imprisoned.

On Sunday, November 30th, we will NOT have worship in the building. NEW: We will be hosting "The Mount Market" on-site (weather permitting, we'll be outside). We will also send out Members of the Mount to be representatives of God's love in a tangible way.

✨ Why It Matters

Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, representing about 30% of all new female cancers each year .
In 2025, an estimated 310,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed, and approximately 43,000 women will die from the disease .
While overall survival rates have improved, significant racial disparities persist. Black women are about 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite having slightly lower incidence rates.
They are also more likely to be diagnosed at later stages and with more aggressive subtypes, such as triple-negative breast cancer , which occurs at nearly twice the rate in Black women compared to white women. Because of these disparities, annual mammograms are especially critical: they can detect cancer up to two years before it can be felt , improving treatment outcomes and expanding therapeutic options.
Experts recommend that women begin yearly screenings at age 40 — and that Black women in particular talk with their healthcare providers about starting even earlier, especially if they have additional risk factors.
Early detection not only saves lives but also helps close the racial gap in breast cancer outcomes.

What does SMZBC do to address the issue? Sixth Mount Zion financially supports Safe Harbor Shelter (https://safeharborshelter.com/) and the YWCA of Richmond (https://ywcarichmond.org/) both of which work to end intimate partner and domestic violence.

��️ A Note on Safety and Security ��️

In an effort to keep everyone safe during worship and ministry activities, our Trustees are asking all members and guests to help us maintain a secure environment. In this current climate, we must all do our part to stay vigilant and protect one another. Please remember the following important guidelines:

�� Be aware of your surroundings at all times while on church property. If you see something that doesn’t feel right, notify a Trustee or Staff Person immediately.
�� Do not prop open any exterior doors under any circumstances. All doors should remain closed and locked unless they are being actively monitored.
⏰ Arrive on Time for Worship: Arriving on time also helps us maintain a secure environment, as it reduces the need to open the exterior doors multiple times once worship has begun.
��️ Exit the building promptly after worship and other events so that our Trustees can properly secure the church.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Sixth Mount Zion a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

If you registered your child before August 26th, we need you to register again.
Our original form did not ask for young people's ages or grade levels.
We need to prepare materials, order activities, and make sure we have enough food.

A few reminders:

This is For School-age Children: We are looking for K-12 graders, but will allow a 4-year old who is in school. We cannot accept registrations for children 4 and under who are not in school (daycare does not count). Please honor this requirement.
Parents/Guardians: don’t register yourself, unless you are volunteering for Saturday �� (we added a line for you under grade level and participation that says you are a volunteer). If you are registering multiple children, add Child 1 as the primary registrant and then the others.
Only sign your child up if you are planning to bring them.

We believe in the power of prayer! We want to cover our students, parents, educators, and support staff as they begin a new school year. Meet us at The Mount this morning for a special Back to School Prayer during morning worship.

For years, SMZBC has partnered with George Washington Carver Elementary School, as part of our church’s mission. We’ve been invited to help create a welcoming, safe, and smooth arrival experience for students as they begin the school year. Student arrival begins at 7:30 AM on Tuesday, August 19th, and we’ve been told that our presence would mean a great deal.

Did you know...African Americans have the highest rates of colon cancer (also known as colorectal cancer). We face a 20 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer and a 45 percent higher mortality rate than any other race. The SMZBC Men's Ministry is encouraging all Men of the Mount to live a safe, healthy lifestyle...and wear BLUE on Father's Day!

June is Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique health challenges faced by men. Given that men generally have a shorter lifespan than women and considering that African American men tend to live the shortest lives compared to all other demographics, it is especially important for Black men to prioritize their health and wellness. Did you know these three facts about men’s health?

Eating a healthy diet can help men prevent prostate cancer. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can improve prostate health in men. In particular, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, as well as foods containing lycopene like tomatoes, have been found to have protective effects on the prostate. Reducing intake of red meat and dairy products may also help to improve prostate health.
Regular doctor visits and timely medical care can improve men’s health outcomes. Men, particularly African American men, often avoid regular checkups and seeking medical attention due to societal pressure to be tough and self-sufficient. This can lead to dismissing symptoms and delaying medical attention until their condition worsens. Men also avoid professional care for mental health concerns, contributing to a suicide rate four times higher than that of women. This pattern of avoidance can have serious consequences, as preventive care and early detection can improve health outcomes and even save lives.
Positive social relationships can enhance men’s health. Strong relationships are vital for men’s health. Research shows that having solid social connections lowers anxiety and depression, boosts self-esteem and empathy, and strengthens the immune system. On the flip side, lacking social support can have a more detrimental impact on men’s health than obesity and smoking. According to Harvard Medical School, marriage also brings significant health advantages for men, including lower rates of heart disease and stroke, better mental health, and increased longevity compared to unmarried men.
