Meet Our Pastor

 

 

Rev. Tyrone E. Nelson

 

Tyrone Nelson is a native of Richmond, VA. After completing his public school education, he earned his Associate of Science in Business Administration from the J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University's School of Theology

 

For 10 years, Tyrone was employed and worked in various capacities for CVS Pharmacy (from front store clerk to store manager).  From 1998-2001, he served as a Training Store Manager and member of the regional Diversity Team.

 

Tyrone has a long history of working with children, youth, and young adults.  He has served three churches as children and youth leader in the Richmond and vicinity area. He served 3 years as the state Director of Youth and Evangelism Ministries for the Baptist General Convention (BGC) of VA which includes over 1,000 churches statewide.  While working at the BGC, Tyrone developed a statewide youth worker newsletter, created a regional mentoring program, and led retreats for approximately 2,700 youth per year.  He also served as an advisor for the Teen Advisory Board of the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation and the off-campus minister for the Baptist Student Union of Virginia Union University.  Tyrone has served as an adjunct session leader the School of Theology, teaching a class entitled “Developing Effective Youth Ministry” for independent study students.

 

Tyrone has a heart for working to meet the needs of people.  Therefore, he is involved with several different community, church, and civic organizations.  Currently, he is committed to the following:

 

 

Tyrone currently serves as the pastor of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond.  Since arriving in April of 2005, the church has experienced growth in its membership and ministries.  The church is currently the home to the Center for Christian Education and Spiritual Development and its Saturday Night Live Worship services.  It has become a diverse church that meets the needs of its children, youth, youth adults, adults, and seniors. 

 

Tyrone is married to the former Sharaza Cotman and they are the proud parents of Tyrone Jr., Sydney and Makenzie.
