How To Reach Us

Our Pastor

The Reverend Tyrone Nelson is a native of Richmond, VA. After completing his public school education, he earned his Associate of Science in Business Administration from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University; and a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University.

Reverend Nelson's ministry started with his service as a Youth Minister for two churches and the position of Director of Youth and Evangelism Ministries for the Baptist General Convention (BGC) of VA. Reverend Nelson currently serves as the seventh pastor of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. The church has over 140 years of rich history, yet continues to adapt to the needs of the 21st Century.  With Reverend Nelson as leader, the congregation has made it their focus to address issues that impact the community.

Reverend Nelson has a heart for working to meet the needs of people, especially those who are overlooked and underprivileged.  His passion to speak truth to power has led him to become involved with several different community, religious, and civic organizations. In 2009, he was named one of Style Weekly's "Top 40 Under 40".  He is a graduate of the Leadership Metro Richmond program.

In November 2011, Reverend Nelson was elected by the citizens of Henrico County (Varina District), to serve as its Supervisor.  He is the first African American elected official in the district’s history, and only the second African American Supervisor in Henrico County.

Previously, Reverend Nelson served as a Board Member for the Department of Social Services for Henrico County, the Historic Jackson Ward Association, and The Shops at White Oak Village Community Development Authority.

Reverend Nelson's current commitments include memberships on the following boards:

  • Baptist General Convention of Virginia
  • Culture Works
  • Boaz & Ruth
  • Henrico County Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc.
