Reverend Nelson's ministry started with a strong youth and children base through his employment with three Virginia churches and the position of Director of Youth and Evangelism Ministries for the Baptist General Convention (BGC) of VA. His ministry with the Teen Advisory Board of the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation and the Baptist Student Union of Virginia Union University moved him into a growing awareness of the social and life challenges of young adults and is evidenced by the growing number of young adults that call him pastor. Yet, Reverend Nelson has a seasoned personal church life guided by his parents, Deacon James Nelson, Jr. and Reverend Barbara Nelson that gives him a great ease and appreciation for his older and senior adult congregants as well.
Reverend Nelson currently serves as the pastor of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church; a church rich in history, yet with open arms for the present day and future needs of her people and community. Under his pastorate the church has seen monumental growth and the addition of new educational and social entities.
Reverend Nelson has a heart for working to meet the needs of people. Therefore, he is involved with several different community, church, and civic organizations. Most recently in the year of 2007, he re-established the church as an Overflow Shelter for the homeless of the community during the winter season. Reverend Nelson's commitments are of impact and purpose:
